This week I made a ruffled Grand Marnier wedding cake for Chaz and Steve who were getting married at Mantell’s in Mt Eden. I met this gorgeous couple at the Grand Wedding show in October and Chaz fell in love with my ruffled wedding cake I was exhibiting at the time. We all got together a month later and had a lovely afternoon tasting cakes, chatting about their plans and deciding on the flavour of their cake. Actually we all had so much fun we ended up having a wine or two. Anyway eventually they chose my son’s favourite cake – a Grand Marnier cake with almonds, sour cream and yummy little Valrhona chocolate pearls. This cake is so exotic but seems to appeal to people of all ages.
Chaz and Steve were wonderful to work with because they left the overall design of the cake completely to me. The only instructions they gave me was that they wanted a green ombre (graduated colour) cake (to match the brides-maids’ dresses) and the cake needed to be a certain size for the number of guests they were having. It was all very straight forward. I contacted them again in the beginning of January to make sure we were all still on track and then Steve dropped off a piece of fabric for the colour and away we went. “We trust your creativity” they said.
I really loved this cake – it was so soft and dreamy and the colour was so watery and summery – just like the sea. I dusted the roses lightly with a soft fuchsia pink which gave them a slight mauve tint and I think it all worked really well. Lastly my lovely white cake stand from French Country showed the cake off perfectly and then I scattered sugar rose petals around the magnificent silver tray it rested on.
Ruffled cake and cakes with texture are my speciality – I love making them and I think they work really well with the sugar flowers I make. So if you would like a cake like this just give me a call on 029 356 3668 or email me on firstname.lastname@example.org. I would love to talk to you.
